How to request and access public records

The Portage County Veterans Service Commission is committed to transparency and complies with the Freedom of Information Act (FOIA). This page provides information about making FOIA requests and accessing public records.
Making a FOIA Request
To make a FOIA request, please provide:
- →Your full name and contact information
- →A detailed description of the records you are seeking
- →The time period covered by your request
- →Your preferred format for receiving the records
Response Time
We strive to respond to all FOIA requests within 20 business days. Complex requests may require additional time, in which case we will notify you and provide updates on the status of your request.
Exceptions
Some complex requests may take longer to process due to the volume of records, need for consultations, or other factors. We'll always keep you informed of any delays.
Fees
While we aim to provide information at minimal cost, some requests may incur fees for:
- →Document copying or scanning
- →Staff time for extensive searches
- →Electronic media for digital records
We will notify you of any applicable fees before processing your request.
Exemptions
Certain information may be exempt from disclosure, including:
- →Personal identifying information of veterans and their families
- →Medical records and private health information
- →Information that could compromise personal privacy
